In his first appearance at the Tour Championship, the season-ending event on the U.S. Professional Golf (PGA) Tour, in seven years, Siwon Kim says he's motivated to "just go out there and be aggressive down the stretch."

Kim will tee off on Thursday at the Tour Championship at Eastlake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

The Tour Championship, the final event of the 2022-2023 season, is for the top 30 players on the season's FedExCup points list.

It's the final event of the season for the top 30 players in the FedExCup standings, and it's where players are recognized as one of the top players on Tour and earn the right to play in major events the following year.

"I think it's a great way to end the year," Kim told the PGA Tour of his return to the Tour Championship after a seven-year absence in 2016, "because I've won this year and I've made it to the Tour Championship, which was my biggest goal before the season.

"Coming back here after seven years, it reminds me of that, and it's great to be able to compete with such great players again," said Kim, who won the Sony Open in January to make it four wins on Tour. "In 2016, I felt really honored just to be here, but this year, I'm determined to finish better."

Kim finished the 2016 Tour Championship in a tie for 10th place and finished 17th in the FedExCup standings.

This year, she entered the Tour Championship ranked 20th in the FedExCup standings.

The Tour Championship system is different now than it was in 2016.

Starting in 2019, the Tour Championship has a bonus stroke system. Players start the Tour Championship with bonus strokes based on their FedExCup standings leading up to the Tour Championship.

For example, the FedExCup leader starts the Tour Championship at 10-under par, second at 8-under, third at 7-under, and so on.

The Tour Championship standings are then directly translated into the final FedExCup standings for the year.

Because the 16th through 20th place finishers start the tournament at exactly 2 under par, Kim will start the day eight strokes behind leader Scottie Schaeffler (USA).

"Even though I'm behind, I'm going to try to be aggressive down the stretch because it's easy to do," said Kim. "I think I'll be able to focus on my play and start off relaxed rather than thinking about the gap between me and first place."

Kim will tee off in Round 1 at 1:21 a.m. on Friday with Corey Connors (CAN).
