New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge hit three home runs in his first career game to lift his team out of a record-setting losing streak.
The Yankees won 9-1 at home against the Washington Nationals in the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series at Yankee Stadium in New York, U.S., on Thursday (local time).
The Yankees ended a long losing streak after a 1-2 loss to the Nats the day before, their first nine-game losing streak in 41 years since 1982.
If the Yankees had lost that game, they would have lost 10 in a row for the first time in 110 years since 1913.
The Yankees were saved by Geoffo Jersey.
Starting in the No. 2 spot, Judge went 4-for-4 with three doubles, a home run, and six RBIs.
In his first at-bat, Jersey hit a solo arch off Washington starter Mackenzie Gore in the first inning, then cleared the fence with two outs in the second.
In the seventh, she capped off the win with her 27th home run of the season and third solo shot of the game.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman admits Yankees' failure this season in press conference
"This is the 34th individual three-homer game in Yankees history, with 24 others having accomplished the feat. The last time a Yankees player hit three home runs in a game was Anthony Rizzo on April 27, 2022."
With the win, the Yankees improved to 61-65, but are still in last place in the American League East.
They are 17 games behind the division-leading Baltimore Orioles and 9.5 games behind the third-place Seattle Mariners in the American League Wild Card race.
Heading into the season, MLB history website FanGraphs gave the Yankees an 81.2 percent chance of making the postseason.
Now, with just six weeks to go until the end of the regular season, that number is less than 1%.
The last time the Yankees missed the postseason was in 2016 (84-78, 4th in the division).
Brian Cashman, the Yankees' general manager since 1998, declared before the game against Washington that "this season has been a disaster" and hinted at the possible end of his long tenure with the organization, saying, "After the season, everyone will be judged, including me."
