Digital effects on screens at the Opening Ceremony
The lighting of the torch was also done digitally with a digital runner.

The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games emphasized eco-friendliness and cutting-edge technology at the opening ceremony with a 'digital fireworks display' and a 'digital torch'.

The Asian Games kicked off at the Olympic Sports Center Stadium in Hangzhou, China, with the Opening Ceremony at 9 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday, marking the official start of the "Festival of 4.6 billion Asians.

Prior to the start of the Games, the organizing committee announced that the opening ceremony would not feature traditional fireworks in an effort to be low-carbon and environmentally friendly. The plan was to fill the void with cutting-edge technology.

Instead of fireworks shooting into the sky to signal the start of the Games, the opening ceremony featured a digital fireworks display on a screen in the opening hall.

Digital fireworks lit up the stadium not only during the opening ceremony, but also on the live broadcast. There were some real small firecrackers that went off underneath the billboards, but the main show was digital.

However, due to the 3D post-production process, there were fewer surprises as only the wires were visible on site.

Organizers also used a digital torch. Since June, more than 100 million people have reportedly participated in the relay by waving their smartphones.

It was also a departure from the tradition of the host country's sports stars being the last to light the flame.

Six torchbearers, including Chinese table tennis player Fan Zhenndong and swimming gold medalist Wang Shun, were the final torchbearers, and they were joined by digital torchbearers who had been following the relay alongside their social media followers. The flame was real, not digital.

The organizers have emphasized cutting-edge technology in the build-up to the Games, including three-dimensional animation and augmented reality (AR).

The opening ceremony took place on the grounds, where a large screen was set up to show various scenes. An electronic board near the stands was also utilized to add effects such as flying lanterns.

Meanwhile, the Korean athletes were the 16th to appear in the opening ceremony, according to the English alphabet. Men's fencer Koo Bon-gil (Korea Sports Promotion Organization) and women's swimmer Kim Seo-young (Gyeongbuk Provincial Office) were the flag bearers.

South Korea sent a record 1140 athletes to the Games, competing in 39 sports. It aims to win more than 50 gold medals and finish third overall.

The 19th edition of the Asian Games was postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will be held five years after the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games.
